Matching Existing Paint Colors
At VIP Services, we regularly handle patchwork, texture repairs, and stain blocking for walls and ceilings. The most common question that comes up is simple: how do you match the existing paint?
Paint Matching Options
There are a few ways to approach paint matching, and some methods produce better results than others.
- Use leftover paint – The best option is using the original paint if it’s still available. Even if it’s older, it often provides the closest match.
- Buy the same paint again – If you know the brand, color name, and sheen, purchasing a new gallon from the same manufacturer is the next best option.
- Match from a sample – If neither option is available, a small piece of wall can be used to create a custom color match.
Touching Up Paint
Touch-ups can work in certain situations, but only under specific conditions. If the paint is relatively new (within 3–4 years), hasn’t faded, and the original paint is available, spot touch-ups can blend well.
In most cases, however, even a well-matched paint will have a slight variation in shade. Because of this, the recommended approach is to paint the entire wall from corner to corner and floor to ceiling. This eliminates visible differences and creates a consistent finish.
For ceilings, the same rule applies. If there’s a natural stopping point, the entire ceiling section should be painted to maintain a uniform look.
Can Paint Be Matched Perfectly?
A perfect match is not always guaranteed. VIP Services will start with the closest match possible and then determine whether a touch-up or full repaint is the better solution.
For the best possible results on small touch-ups, Sherwin-Williams is often the most reliable option. Their process includes both computer matching and manual adjustments by experienced staff to refine the color.
If the first match isn’t close enough, the color can be adjusted and retested until it reaches an acceptable result.
