Tiled Showers

Replacing a tiled shower can involve everything from demolition and framing to tile installation, along with optional features such as recessed niches and benches.

Shower remodel costs typically range from $5,000 to $8,500 depending on the shower size and the type of materials being removed. Smaller showers, such as a 3′ × 3′ layout, fall on the lower end of the range, while larger showers measuring around 5′ × 3–4′ generally cost more.

The type of tile, tile size, and design layout can also affect the final price. Decorative patterns, stripes, or complex tile layouts usually increase labor and overall project cost.

While the final result is always important, proper preparation to control dust during demolition and installation is key to ensuring a positive remodeling experience. Be sure to ask your remodeling contractor for their written process and the steps they take to minimize dust during the project.

Niches

Many homeowners prefer recessed shower niches, which are custom-sized to fit the design of each shower. These may be standard single niches, typically around 15″ × 15″, or larger double niches and long horizontal niches that extend across a section of the wall.

Depending on the size, design, and tile work involved, recessed niches typically range from about $600 to $1,000 or more.

Shower Benches and Seats

Shower benches are a popular option that many homeowners choose to include in their shower remodel. These can be installed along an entire side wall or built as a corner seat depending on the shower layout.

At VIP Services, benches are constructed using concrete blocks to prevent rot, which is part of our standard building process. The typical cost for building a shower bench ranges from $600 to $850 depending on the size and design.

Bench seating also adds comfort and convenience, especially for homeowners who prefer a place to sit while showering or shaving. It can also improve accessibility and make the shower easier to use for aging homeowners or guests.

Shower Valves

The shower valve is usually replaced during a shower remodel, especially if the existing valve is several years old. New shower valves can range from $300 to $1,000 or more depending on whether you choose a basic model or a more advanced luxury fixture.

Installation costs from a licensed plumber typically start around $500 and may increase depending on the complexity of the installation.

Additional options such as body jets, hand sprayers, and diverter valves can also be installed, but these features increase both plumbing labor and material costs.

When considering additional spray outlets, it is important to evaluate the size of the home’s water supply line. Multiple jets can reduce water pressure, and in some cases a larger supply line may be required to maintain proper flow, which can significantly increase the plumbing cost.

Glass Surrounds

Most showers include custom glass enclosures, either framed or frameless. While framed units are typically 20–30% less expensive, frameless glass surrounds are more common due to their clean, modern appearance.

Popular finish options for the hardware include black, brushed nickel, chrome, brass, and the increasingly popular brushed gold. The cost difference between these finishes is usually minimal.

Depending on the size of the shower, most custom glass enclosures start around $2,000 and can extend to $3,500 or more depending on the exact dimensions, number of panels, installation location, and overall height of the glass.

Floor Tiles

Floor tile installation, including demolition of the existing flooring, typically ranges from $18 to $25 per square foot depending on the current flooring material and the price of the tile selected. This estimate assumes the existing tile is installed over a concrete slab.

If the tile is installed over a wood subfloor, a cement backer board must first be installed before laying the new tile. This typically adds $4 to $6 per square foot for additional materials and labor. Second-floor installations may also increase the overall cost slightly.

For most bathrooms, typical floor tile installations range between $1,500 and $2,500 depending on the size of the space.

As part of the VIP Services standard process, narrow grout lines are used to reduce maintenance and cleaning. We also apply a grout sealer to help prevent shading, discoloration, mold, and mildew for approximately the first year.

An optional upgrade many homeowners choose is epoxy grout. Epoxy grout does not require sealing and provides longer-term protection against mold, mildew, and discoloration.

Cabinets

While custom cabinets are sometimes preferred, prefinished solid wood cabinets are more common due to both cost and availability. At VIP Services, our standard is solid wood cabinets rather than particle board construction.

Most bathroom layouts include approximately 10 to 12 feet of lower cabinets, along with the option of an upper cabinet above the toilet for additional storage.

Prefinished shaker-style cabinets typically range from $100 to $150 per linear foot. Demolition and installation costs generally range from $45 to $65 per linear foot.

Counters

Be cautious of advertisements promoting granite or quartz countertops at $35 per square foot. While raw materials may cost that much, fabrication, finishing, delivery, and installation are always additional.

Many suppliers sell granite or quartz by the full slab, which often requires purchasing more material than necessary and increases the amount of waste, raising the overall project cost.

VIP Services works with several fabricators who offer a wide selection of quartz and granite priced by the square foot. This approach helps reduce excess material and keeps overall costs more manageable.

Quartz countertops typically cost about 10–15% more than granite. After including sinks, sink cutouts and polishing, demolition, installation, measurements, templates, backsplashes, and faucet drilling, most granite and quartz countertops range from $135 to $200 per square foot installed.

Tubs and Decks

Most modern bathrooms include a standard garden tub with a tiled deck and backsplash. Many homeowners are also choosing to install freestanding Roman-style tubs for a more contemporary look.

The cost of a tub can range from approximately $500 on the low end to $2,000 or more depending on the style and quality. Installation by a licensed plumber typically ranges from $650 to $1,200 depending on the complexity of the plumbing work.

Deck-mounted valves are commonly installed around garden tubs and are generally priced similarly to shower valves. Floor-mounted valves used with freestanding Roman-style tubs usually require 30–40% more labor due to the additional plumbing work.

Most homeowners choose to tile the deck and front skirt of a garden tub. With freestanding tubs, it is common to install tile on the walls behind the tub as a decorative backsplash. Including tile materials and installation, these finishes typically range from $1,500 to $2,500.

Painting

Since the early 1990s, wallpaper has steadily gone out of style, so a common request during bathroom remodels is to remove old wallpaper and retexture the walls.

This process typically includes wallpaper removal, wall texturing, and painting the walls and ceilings, along with the doors and trim.

For a typical 10′ × 10′ bathroom, the cost for these services generally ranges from $1,500 to $2,100, including paint, texture materials, and preparation work.
